The Indianapolis warehouse stock breaks cleanly into eras, and the rack spec should follow:

• Eastside / Shadeland corridor (1955–1985): 22–26 ft clear, 2-way beam anchors in older concrete, legacy wood-deck uppers. We rebuild selective into these buildings at 14–16 ft top beam, often stepping down an upright size class to keep anchor tension inside what the slab will hold.
• Park 100 / I-65 NW (1985–2005): 28–32 ft clear, poured concrete 5–6 in, ESFR retrofits common. Drive-in and push-back are the usual wins here — deeper reserve, same SKU count per bay.
• Ameriplex / I-70 East (2005–present): 36–40 ft clear, 7 in FF/FL floors, ESFR as-built. This is where we install 90-in double-deep selective for Amazon-style e-comm, or full pallet flow for FIFO grocery and pharma.
• I-465 South inner ring: Mixed vintage flex buildings 20–28 ft clear; usually single-deep selective with added row spacers for reach truck use.

Three Indianapolis-specific things slow projects more than the work itself:

• BNS plan review: Marion County's Department of Business and Neighborhood Services requires stamped engineering for any rack over 12 ft top-of-load. Turnaround is typically 10–15 business days; we submit with the building file so it runs parallel rather than sequential.
• High-piled storage letter (IFC Ch 32): Anything over 12 ft storage height or over 500 sq ft of Class IV/plastics triggers a high-piled review with IFD. We include commodity classification and flue-space geometry in the submittal — skipping that is the #1 reason jobs get red-tagged at rough-in.
• Citizens Energy sprinkler: If your rack config increases required sprinkler density, Citizens wants a water-flow test and hydraulic calc on file. ESFR buildings usually pass without in-rack sprinklers up to 35 ft storage height — but only if flue spaces stay open.
• Seismic: Marion County is Seismic Design Category A — no special seismic detailing required on most selective rack, which keeps upright prices lower than you'd pay in Memphis or St. Louis.
